Clifford Jordan (September 2, 1931 – March 27, 1993) was an American tenor saxophonist, an outstanding hard-bop figure. Born in Chicago, he began playing saxophone in his youth, inspired by Lester Young and Sonny Stitt. In the 1950s, Jordan joined New York’s scene, collaborating with Max Roach, Horace Silver, and Charles Mingus. His style featured a warm, robust tone and lyrical improvisations, blending blues and swing. Jordan recorded numerous albums as a leader, including Starting Time, and was known for crafting harmonious ensembles. Later, he taught, inspiring young musicians.
