Ray Bryant (December 24, 1931 – June 2, 2011) was an American jazz pianist and composer, a master of hard bop and soul jazz. Born in Philadelphia, he began playing piano as a child, inspired by gospel music and classical works. In the 1950s, Bryant became a prominent figure, collaborating with Carmen McRae, Miles Davis, and Sonny Rollins. His style blended bluesy warmth with virtuosic technique, creating accessible yet profound improvisations. Bryant recorded numerous albums, including hits like Little Susie. Later, he taught and performed, leaving a legacy as one of jazz’s most soulful pianists.
