“In Person” is a live album by the Bobby Timmons Trio, recorded on October 1, 1961, at the Village Vanguard, New York, produced by Orrin Keepnews with engineer Ray Fowler. Originally released on Riverside Records (RLP 391), it was reissued by Jazz Workshop Vinyl as a 180-gram audiophile LP (JW-051), remastered at Plaza Sound Studios to capture the live performance’s atmosphere. The lineup features Bobby Timmons (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Albert “Tootie” Heath (drums). The tracklist includes standards like Autumn Leaves and Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise, Timmons’s originals (So Tired, Popsy), and a brief Dat Dere theme. The music is soul jazz with hard-bop roots, with Timmons’s piano sparkling with bluesy riffs and swinging energy, backed by a young Carter and powerhouse Heath. “In Person” is a live classic, capturing Timmons’s magic on stage.
Bobby Timmons (December 19, 1935 March 1, 1974) was an American jazz pianist and composer, a pivotalfigure in hard bop and soul jazz. Born in Philadelphia, he began playing in church before studying at thePhiladelphia Academy. In the late 1950s, Timmons rose to fame with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers andCannonball Adderley’s quintet, composing hits Moanin’, Dat Dere, and This Here, which defined soul jazz. Hisstyle blended blues, gospel, and virtuosic improvisation, creating infectious, soulful energy. As a leader, herecorded several albums for Riverside. Timmons remains an icon for his soul-jazz contributions and vibrant live performances.
