Bobby Timmons (December 19, 1935 – March 1, 1974) was an American jazz pianist and composer, a pivotalfigure in hard bop and soul jazz. Born in Philadelphia, he began playing in church before studying at thePhiladelphia Academy. In the late 1950s, Timmons rose to fame with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers andCannonball Adderley’s quintet, composing hits Moanin’, Dat Dere, and This Here, which defined soul jazz. Hisstyle blended blues, gospel, and virtuosic improvisation, creating infectious, soulful energy. As a leader, herecorded several albums for Riverside. Timmons remains an icon for his soul-jazz contributions and vibrant live performances.
