Gene Shaw (February 7, 1926 – August 17, 1989) was an American jazz trumpeter, a notable figure in Chicago’s jazz scene. Born in Detroit, he began playing trumpet in his youth, inspired by Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. In the 1950s, Shaw moved to Chicago, becoming an active part of the local scene, collaborating with musicians like Charles Mingus and local ensembles. His style featured a warm, melodic tone and bluesy expression, standing out in hard-bop settings. Though he recorded only a few albums as a leader, his work is cherished for its soulfulness and craftsmanship. Later, he focused on teaching, sharing his expertise with young jazz players.
