It compiles three iconic albums by Gilberto, recorded between 1958 and 1961 in Rio de Janeiro: “Chega de Saudade” (Odeon 3073, 1959), “O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor” (Odeon 3151, 1960), and “João Gilberto” (Odeon 3202, 1961), plus a bonus track, Este Seu Olhar, previously released only on the U.S. edition “The Boss of the Bossa Nova” (Atlantic 8070). The recordings took place at Odeon studios in Rio de Janeiro, produced by Aloysio de Oliveira, with arrangements by Antonio Carlos Jobim and featuring musicians like Nicolino Cópia (flute), Edmundo Maciel (trombone), Milton Banana (drums), and Rubens Bassini (bongo). The album includes 39 tracks, such as Chega de Saudade, Desafinado, Corcovado, and Manhã de Carnaval, showcasing bossa nova in its purest form. The music features Gilberto’s gentle «batida» guitar rhythms and hypnotic vocals, creating a warm, intimate atmosphere. The Ubatuqui edition, with 24-bit remastering and a 4-page insert with lyrics, is prized for its crystalline sound, capturing the magic of early bossa nova. “The Warm World Of João Gilberto” is a treasure, celebrating Gilberto’s genius and the birth of a genre.
João Gilberto (June 10, 1931 – July 6, 2019) was a Brazilian guitarist, vocalist, and composer, a bossa nova legend, nicknamed «O Mito» (The Legend) in Brazil. Born in Juazeiro, Bahia, he began playing guitar in his youth, inspired by Brazilian samba and American jazz. In the late 1950s, Gilberto pioneered bossa nova, blending simplified samba rhythms with rich harmonies and his unique vocal style—soft, almost whispering, without vibrato. His debut recording Chega de Saudade (1958) launched the global bossa nova craze, making him a star. Gilberto collaborated with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, and Stan Getz, recording iconic albums that defined the genre. Later, he lived in the USA and Mexico, continuing to perform and inspire musicians like Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.
