“Something Blue” is an album by Paul Horn, recorded on October 27, 1959, in Los Angeles and originally released on HiFi Records (R 607). The Jazz Workshop Vinyl reissue as a 180-gram audiophile LP (JW-090) revives this record with remastering that highlights the flute and saxophone’s clarity. The lineup features Paul Horn (flute, alto saxophone), Jimmy Bond (bass), Billy Higgins (drums), Paul Moer (piano), and Emil Richards (vibraphone). The album includes Horn’s originals like Dun-Dunnee and standards. The music is West Coast jazz with hard-bop elements, with Horn’s flute melodic and fluid, and Richards’s vibraphone adding vibrant textures. The Jazz Workshop reissue, limited to 500 copies, is prized for its warm, detailed sound, capturing California’s jazz spirit. “Something Blue” is a graceful record, showcasing Horn’s mastery.
Paul Horn (March 17, 1930 – June 29, 2014) was an American flautist, saxophonist, and composer, a pioneer of West Coast jazz and world music. Born in New York, he began on clarinet before mastering flute and saxophone, inspired by classical music and jazz. In the 1950s, Horn moved to Los Angeles, collaborating with Chico Hamilton and Duke Ellington. His style featured lyrical, airy playing, later incorporating Indian and Eastern music elements. Horn recorded numerous albums, including the groundbreaking Inside the Taj Mahal. Later, he taught and explored music as a meditative tool, leaving a unique legacy.
