Shirley Horn (May 1, 1934 – October 20, 2005) was an American jazz vocalist and pianist, renowned for her intimate, emotive style. Born in Washington, D.C., she began playing piano as a child, studying classical music, but embraced jazz as a teenager, inspired by Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson. In the 1950s, Horn started performing in clubs, and in the 1960s, she caught Miles Davis’s attention, who championed her career. Her style blended refined piano playing with soft, soulful vocals, creating an atmosphere of closeness and warmth. Horn recorded numerous albums, and her work remains a benchmark for jazz vocals. Later, she taught, inspiring young artists.
