“Out Of This World” is an album by Walter Benton, recorded on September 19 and 21, 1960, in New York City and originally released on Jazzland Records (JLP 928S). The Jazz Workshop Vinyl reissue as a 180-gram audiophile LP (JW-071) revives this record with remastering that highlights its depth and clarity. The lineup features Walter Benton (tenor saxophone), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums). The album includes the title track Out Of This World, standards like A Blues Mood, and Benton’s originals. The music is hard bop with bluesy hues, with Benton’s saxophone robust and expressive, and a young Hubbard adding vibrant trumpet lines. The rhythm section, with Kelly and Chambers, provides a swinging foundation, perfectly supporting the soloists. The Jazz Workshop reissue, limited to 500 copies, is celebrated for its warm, detailed sound, transporting listeners to the New York studio atmosphere. “Out Of This World” is a hard-bop gem, showcasing Benton’s talent and a stellar ensemble.
Walter Benton (September 8, 1930 – August 14, 2000) was an American tenor saxophonist, a vibrant hard-bop player. Born in Los Angeles, he began playing saxophone in his youth, inspired by Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins. In the 1950s, Benton became a notable figure on the jazz scene, collaborating with masters like Max Roach, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, and Quincy Jones. His style featured a robust, warm tone and melodic improvisation, blending lyricism with energetic swing. Though he recorded only a few albums as a leader, his contributions to hard bop and ensemble work earned him respect among musicians. Later, he focused on teaching, passing his expertise to young jazz players.
