“Branching Out” is an album by Nat Adderley, recorded in September 1958 at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, and originally released on Riverside Records (RLP 12-285). The Jazz Workshop Vinyl reissue as a 180-gram audiophile LP (JW-114) revives this record with remastering that highlights the cornet’s clarity. The lineup features Nat Adderley (cornet), Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone), Barry Harris (piano), Sam Jones (bass), and Albert “Tootie” Heath (drums). The album includes Nat’s originals like Sister Caroline and standards such as I Never Knew I Could Love Anybody. The music is hard bop with soul-jazz hues, with Nat’s cornet warm and expressive, and Griffin’s saxophone adding powerful lines. The rhythm section provides a swinging, vibrant foundation. The Jazz Workshop reissue, limited to 500 copies, is prized for its detailed sound, capturing New York’s atmosphere. “Branching Out” is a vibrant record, showcasing Nat’s leadership talent.
Nat Adderley (November 25, 1931 – January 2, 2000) was an American jazz trumpeter and cornetist, a prominent figure in hard bop and soul jazz. Born in Tampa, Florida, he was the younger brother of saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. Nat began playing trumpet in his youth, inspired by Miles Davis and Clifford Brown. In the 1950s, he became a star, collaborating with his brother’s quintet, as well as Lionel Hampton and J.J. Johnson. His style featured a bright, melodic tone and energetic improvisations, perfectly complementing ensembles. Nat recorded numerous albums as a leader, including Branching Out, and left a legacy as one of jazz’s most soulful trumpeters. Later, he taught, inspiring young musicians.
